Best Cabins on Any Cruise Ship

front of cruise ship

So if you have a cabin on a low deck and towards the back, you’ll be right above them. Cruise ship engines aren’t usually noisy, but during certain manoeuvres, they can create strong vibrations that can be felt in the cabins. If the hangers in your wardrobe are rattling, this can be noisy too. The stern is located at the back end of the ship, opposite from the bow. At the stern of the ship, cruisers can enjoy the view of uninterrupted ocean views and appreciate the neverending waves in the ship's wake.

Across from the desk, I had a couch positioned in between two closets.

If you’re booking your first cruise, choosing the perfect cabin can be challenging. Royal Caribbean has caught onto this this trend and announced pricing changes related to aft rooms. Aft facing balconies and Junior Suites are now going to be separated out as new categories.

Sea Days

Ultimately, the best cruise ship cabin location will vary for each individual. Before making a decision, consider your priorities and assess what aspects of a cruise matter the most to you. Or is having a quiet and private space more valuable to your cruising experience? On the other hand, staying in the back or aft cabins of the cruise can provide a quieter, more serene atmosphere. It’s important to remember that pricing can vary depending on factors such as the ship’s age, size, and destination, as well as cabin location.

Best Cruise Ship Cabins for Spa-Lovers

front of cruise ship

That makes it less desirable if someone is worried about motion sickness. If you pick a cabin at the very back of the ship, you can enjoy a view of the ship's wake, and these tend to be quite popular with cruise fans. Not only is it a pretty view, but the balcony can be bigger on the back. There are many advantages to the cabins at the back of the cruise ship, which is why they are more sort after. However, the front is especially bad as the bow bounces and cuts through the waves. This will be much worse in rough seas and one of the worst places to be on the ship.

Size of Aft Cabins and Corner Cabins

If you want a cabin with a special view but are looking to save a little money and aren't sensitive to noise, a forward cabin might be right for you. Also choose a forward cabin if you're worried about exhaust, soot or cigarette smoke wafting across your verandah. Cruisers in cabins at the front of the ship are the first to see what's ahead.

Docking Days

Located at the front of the cruise ship, the front cabins offer a distinct view of the forward direction and can provide a quite different experience than the stern cabins. Another consideration of staying in a forward cruise ship cabin is the noise from the bow thrusters (propulsion devices used to maneuver the ship). That, paired with water smacking against the front of the ship (especially if you're on a lower deck), could make for some distracting sounds. These are far and away the cruise rooms most affected by waves since they're the first to dip in rough seas.

Advantages of Cabins at the Front of Cruise Ships

If you're after lots of deck space, aft rooms located at one of the ship's corners may have balconies that wrap around both sides of your room to double the viewing pleasure. We are going to be a bit contrarian and support the idea of a cabin near the bow. We have spent more than 2 years on cruise ships (more than 60 differeent ships) and often will book cabins that are far forward. It is true that if you get very rough seas you will feel motion more towards the bow (we do not get seasick) but for me, it just rocks me to sleep.

More Royal Caribbean

Most of the time, these cabins are in the least desirable locations – the front or the back. However, being someone who’s lucky to be able-bodied and doesn’t suffer from seasickness, this doesn’t bother us at all. Cabins towards the rear of a cruise ship are known as ‘aft’ cabins. These balconies have metal balustrades rather than glass to protect from the wind. A disadvantage of this is that you can’t see the sea when sitting down. The maritime industry has its own vernacular, which is used on naval vessels, commercial ships and cruises alike.

Each night, my stateroom attendant replenished towels and brought flyers and schedules for the next day.

When it comes to motion sickness, neither the front nor the back is going to be good for you. More movement is felt at either end of a ship compared to the more stable middle cabin areas. There are many areas to the front of a cruise ship, but its primary purpose is to lead the way,  the vessel through the seas and rivers which it sails.

Enjoying a view from the ship's aft can be almost hypnotic because of how alluring the ocean looks when you have nothing in front of you blocking it. The wake of the ship starts from the water displaced by the bow of the ship and not just from the propellors at the back. At the aft, you might experience low-level noise from the engine rooms and also some vibration. One common comparison choice that pops up is whether to choose a cabin at the front of the ship or the back. His engaging narratives, fueled by a passion for exploration that started at a young age, bring his world adventures to life. Through his relatable writing style, he captures the essence of the places he's visited, complete with unique stories and the occasional intriguing bit of gossip.

About the worst cabins on cruise ships / which staterooms to avoid. The "best cabins for seasickness" are located at the ship's edges (top decks, bow, and stern). The worst area in the front section, as the bow is first hit by waves.

You’ll be well on your way to an amazing cruise experience catered to your particular needs if you take some time to consider your preferences and desires. The ideal spot for a cruise ship accommodation will ultimately depend on the individual. Furthermore, don’t be afraid to consult cruise specialists or travel agencies for individualized recommendations depending on your interests and financial constraints.

Front or Back Of Cruise Ship: Choosing the Best Cabin

front of cruise ship

When it comes to choosing the best cabin for your cruise, there’s no right answer as to which is the best, as it depends very much on your personal preferences. I like to cruise on a budget, and so for me, it’s never worth the extra money to choose a cabin in a midship location. While the room types may differ across ships, the front of a cruise often features standard balcony staterooms or oceanview cabins. Additionally, there may also be a limited selection of luxury suites.

Best Cruise Ship Cabins on a Budget

More importantly, that placement allows crew-assisted evacuation in an emergency. You'll also want to avoid cabins low and forward in the ship (where the anchor being lowered or raised can generate a lot of sound). The same goes for aft rooms (where the ship's generators create a hum that rarely, if ever, stops). Cabins near banks of elevators have been historically called out as noisy, but more so due to rowdy crowds gathering there than mechanical noise.

Room Types and Pricing

That said, there are certain places on cruise ships that are better than others when it comes to cabin location, including the front and back of vessels. There's nothing quite like being able to look forward from your room when on a ship approaching a port or to watch the wake of the ship from a rear-facing cabin. On very large ships, where activity areas are spread far apart, midship cabins also offer the advantage of being at the center of everything. The main pool deck, for instance, is likely right above you when you are in a midship cabin — not a long walk away.

Price Comparison: Does Location Affect Cost?

This is because there are usually just a few rooms lined up along the back of a ship, giving each one more space for a bigger balcony. In particular, aft cabins located on the corners of the ship often have wraparound balconies, creating enough space for chairs, loungers and sometimes a small dining table. Best-view cabins are located forward (at the ship's front/bow) or aft (at the ship's stern). For the best choice of such rooms choose Carnival or Royal Caribbean. Choosing the best cruise cabin location on your ship is a matter of personal choice.

Royal Caribbean Blog is your ultimate source for Royal Caribbean coverage.

Guests tend to see only a small part of what is needed to run the cruise ship. Many locations are off-limits to guests and only accessible to crew members, so you probably don’t have a clue about what is going on below deck. But when you look at these components, you’ll be amazed at how a cruise ship operates. Aft cabins might also experience vibrations from the engine or anchor, which can add to the feeling of motion and be a source of noise.

Cabins at the back

Although there are many more bow types that all serve different purposes based on the locations they visit. When you are facing forward towards the bow, the port is on your left, and the starboard is on your right. This makes them better at riding waves because as the waves approach, they encounter more hull, which increases buoyancy lifting the ship up on the seas. I thought it was the most relaxing area on the ship, so I enjoyed being close by. Not everyone reacts the same way to motion sickness, like tolerance to allergies, so you guys may be ok at the front. If you are referring to cabin location, you will also want to consider and large and potentially noisy public areas directly above or below the cabin.

If your ship sails in calmer waters, then this won’t be so much of a problem. Picture yourself if you were to bow your head or body as a sign of respect when meeting someone of importance. The purpose of the bulbous bulb is to reduce the ship’s drag, which will reduce the ship’s fuel consumption. Some are designed for slow, smooth sailing, and others that visit icy waters are designed to cut through ice.

Destination Guide: Popular Cruise Ports Around the World

A good note for orienting yourself while onboard a cruise ship is to face toward the bow. From there, it's easy to distinguish where you are and in which direction you're headed. If you need a visualization tool, imagine you’re walking toward the mermaid figurehead on the front half of the ship. The bow on the ship is a great spot to watch the front hull break through waves and race toward your next cruise destination. The bow of a ship is the part of the ship that faces forward when the ship is underway. The bow on ship is usually distinguished by a sharply angled hull, which provides less resistance, making it easier for the ship to plow through the water.

Front cabins will feel the most movement of the ship whenever the bow dips in the rougher seas, so if you suffer from motion sickness, front cabins should be avoided, even on the lowest decks. Aft balcony cabins have the ship's largest private verandas, and there are just a few (6-10) such rooms per deck. They are lined up along the stern and give more terrace space and privacy.

Norwegian Jewel's two Garden Villas are combined into an almost 5000 ft2 (465 m2) "cruise mansion". Floor-ceiling windows, plenty of deck furniture, separate bedroom, fabulous private bathroom with hot-tub, 2 additional bedrooms (with their own private bathrooms), living room, dining room. Carnival, Disney, and Royal Caribbean are well known for having more than decent interior cabins - the Carnival's being most spacious, and those of Disney - most family-friendly. The Disney Deluxe Inside Stateroom accommodates 4 persons with a convertible sofa and a pull-down bed and also features a split bath. The largest (by category) and absolutely affordable to most cheap cruise cabins are always "the deal" on Carnival ships. The Carnival's standard cabins are the industry's largest and very well-equipped (even the lowest Small Inside category).

From the bridge, the cruise captain and his navigational crew will navigate the ship through the waters. At the very front of the bow, the amount of the underwater cruise ship is indicated by draft marks. I booked a mid-tier room — a step above interior staterooms, which have no window. It's a category below staterooms with a balcony, and two steps below a suite.

front of cruise ship

Aft-facing cabins are shaded from the wind, offering a warm and calm place to sit and watch the ocean. These balconies are usually a little larger than those on the side of the ship as well. When you see a price advertised for a cruise, it will be based on the cheapest available cabin – usually one at the front.

If you're a big spa fan — the kind who can spend hours on vacation getting treatments — you'll want to get a cabin right near your ship's spa. Walking long distances across a bustling ship in your robe and slippers for a spa appointment can be a bit, well, weird. Becoming familiar with what different terms mean will allow you to easily locate areas on the cruise ship and find essentials. If you have ever wondered where these terms originated, some go back to the early days. Many of them were used when sailors required a steering oar to be able to control the vessel.

They might offer insightful information to assist you in selecting the ideal cabin for your trip. However, if you choose to stay in a cabin near the back or aft of the ship, you may experience a calmer, more peaceful environment. It’s crucial to keep in mind that costs can change according on the age, size, and destination of the ship in addition to the location of the cabin. You can select from a range of room types and prices toward the rear of the ship to suit your needs and budget. While some people don’t mind this movement, others find it uncomfortable and would rather select a stateroom that is closer to the front or back. Starboard hand refers to a buoy on the starboard side of a cruise ship.

If the engine room is the aft end of the ship you may hear some level of noise and perhaps even vibrations if you are on the lower deck directly above it. The long extensive trace of recirculating water left behind the ship as it moves through the water. There’s also sound from the anchor dropping and bow thrusters when in ports, but these shouldn’t affect your experience too much.

Since there are quite a few options, we went on a boat tour to show you exactly what it’s like. Being Kingston locals for several years, we did the 3 Hour Thousand Islands Riverboat Cruise from Kingston. Eric had already done the Kingston sunset cruise, but Lisa hadn’t been out on the water yet. Loved the entertainment and our server was amazing!!! First time any of us visited Kingston to go on the cruise.

Islands Cruises Rockport Boat Line

Scenic narrated boat tours meander through channels, between islands and under bridges from spring through fall, sharing the history of the region. If you’re keen to have a meal and experience the sunset on the water, you can book a sunset dinner cruise. These cruises make use of the long, flat, glass-domed roof boat called the Island Star. In recognition of the trend towards shorter cruises, in 2011 they introduced a high-speed catamaran, the ‘WildCat‘ adding an adventurous alternative to the traditional sightseeing cruise experience.

Visit ghost ships resting underwater with the two-and-a-half hours Lost Ships of the 1000 Islands Cruise. The tour visits seven 18th to 19th century shipwrecks while using video and audio commentary, as well as side-scan sonar images to bring their stories to life. Visitors can also catch a glimpse of the famous Boldt Castle, St. Lawrence Statue, 1000 Islands International Bridge, as well as the many lavish homes that stand on Millionaire’s Row. The Discovery Cruise provides an informative introduction to the unique sights and heritage of the 1000 Islands region, with a main focus on the historic waterfront of Kingston. The cruise passes close to National Historic Sites such as Fort Henry, Canada’s Royal Military College, and the imposing Kingston Penitentiary. The cruise passes close to National Historic Site...

If they said “here’s a bunch of islands” it would have been pretty but boring. We learned that different parts of the islands were named by different people or groups and so that’s why there are different naming conventions all through the region! The guide was actually really interesting and shared historical dates, locations of events, shipwrecks, famous battles, you name it! Heading out of the Kingston waterfront, the entertainer shared time with the audio guide which was a narration over the loudspeakers. If you are unfamiliar with Kingston, head for the massive building called Kingston City Hall. We booked the boat cruise through GetYourGuide (a really good travel company) because the official tour booking website used to be very outdated.

The Thousand Islands are a ‘must see’ attraction when visiting Eastern Ontario and we invite you to experience them YOUR WAY. Climb aboard one of our traditional sightseeing excursion or, get your motor runnin’ on the Islands’ only high speed catamaran, the ‘WildCat’; a soft adventure that’s fun for all ages! As evening falls over the mighty St. Lawrence River, climb aboard for a sunset dinner cruise or special event and experience the quiet serenity of the Islands by night. An archipelago of more than 1,800 islands creates an unparalleled water recreation land.

Northeast cruises in Canada usually include New England adventures as well. See the quiet maritime provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, and explore their windswept coastlines. Cruise from New York to explore the Northeast landscape. Visitors who appreciate a good love story will want to hop aboard the Boldt Castle Stopover Cruise. The tour goes around all of usual 1000 Island haunts, but also makes a 2 hour stopover at Boldt Castle, allowing passengers to explore the castle and its grounds.

It was also easy to see the islands and snap photos from any of the decks so don’t feel like you have to stand at the top the whole time. Once we pushed off from the pier, they went over safety procedures thoroughly which was really good. With that many people aboard it was good to know there was a plan in place if things went bad out on the water. On the side that faces the water, you will see a large green park called Confederation Basin/Park.

Once “in” the islands, the boat started weaving between big ones, small ones, etc. The audio commentary started up and provided the names of the important islands and the history of it. If you’re short on time but want to get out on the Kingston waterfront, you can always do a 1.5 Hour Kingston Discovery Cruise.

This is the park full of attractions and the Kingston Tourist Information Centre. After having booked online, we just walked up to the Kingston ticket pavilion before the cruise, showed the email voucher we got and received our paper tour tickets. That said, you can also book in person when you get to Kingston. However, the summer months are VERY busy in Kingston so some of these tours might sell out if you wait.

As times have changed, 1000 Islands & Seaway Cruises has kept up with these changes by way of introducing new vessels and products sure to appease every taste and budget. A lively narration highlights the history and waterfront of the city of Kingston, and its place at the beginning of the St. Lawrence River and the 1000 Islands region. Kingston is a UNESCO World Heritage Destination well-known for its remarkable and well-preserved 19th-century defense fortifications, abundant shipwrecks, and classical architecture.
